Boxing 101: Tips From The Veteran Training Boxing & Muay Thai Coach

THE UPPERCUT:

Subtly shift your weight to the hip on the side of the rear leg. Dip that side’s shoulder as you crouch down a bit. Next, with the palm up and the arm bent 90 degrees, forcefully rotate toward the side of your lead leg and push off the ball of your back foot, driving the punch upward (aim for the chin of your imaginary opponent). On impact, your palm should face your chest.

THE HOOK:

Shift your weight toward the rear leg as you rotate forcefully to that side and pivot inward on the ball of your front foot. At the same time, whip the lead arm toward the target in an L shape (the elbow should be bent about 90 degrees). Turn your hips into the punch. You can angle your hand one of two ways: vertically, so your palm faces you on impact, or horizontally, so the palm faces the floor.

THE RIGHT CROSS:

Also called the “straight right hand” (if you’re right-handed), it starts from the face and follows an imaginary straight line directly into the target. Drive and pivot from the rear foot, rotating the hips forcefully as your body weight shifts toward the front foot. Extend your right arm toward the target, snapping your wrist downward. On impact, the palm is down and the knuckles up.

Jumping Rope for fitness: Tips From the Norwell Personal Training Company

Looking to raise the fun quotient in your exercise routine? Go old school and reintroduce the jump rope to your fitness repertoire. All you need is a $10 rope and a flat, open space to get started. Jumping rope is a great cardio workout that improves balance, coordination, and agility.

A jump rope keep in mind that jumping with proper form is extremely important. Veteran Training Boxing Instructors suggests the following:

1. Use some wrist and forearm when turning the rope. Make small circles or a cranking motion. Keep your hands level with your hips — don’t move them higher or lower.
2. Jump only an inch or two off the ground. Don’t make big jumps, and try to land softly.
3. Push off from and land on the balls of the feet. Your heels should just tap the ground.
4. Relax your neck and shoulders and avoid hunching.

4a. Keep your elbows bent, as if you were holding a curl bar. A rope that’s too long will pull your elbows away from your torso.

4b. Breathe normally. You should be able to have a conversation with someone while you’re jumping.

Number of calories burned (for a person weighing 155 pounds*): Slow jumping burns 9.4 calories per minute and 281 calories per half hour. Moderate jumping burns 11.7 calories per minute and 352 calories per half hour. And if you really get cooking, fast jumping burns 14 calories per minute and 422 calories per half hour.

Start with a 3 minutes warm-up before any Personal Training or Boot Camp Class and you will see faster results guaranteed.

Now what are you waiting for? Hop to it.

Boxing 101: Tips From The Veteran Training Boxing & Muay Thai Coach

The Jab:

The jab is thrown with the lead hand. Begin with the knees slightly bent, feet staggered, chin down, and hands raised by the sides of your face (start from this basic fighting position before throwing any punch). Push off your back foot and snap the jab out quickly. The lead foot will slide forward slightly before impact. For maximum power, twist your arm in a corkscrew motion before landing.
